Circle of Life

Ask anybody where they want to be when they die and it's at home, peacefully, in their own bed. We are supposed to grow up, have a family, get old and pass away late in life, comfortable in our own home, surrounded by loved ones. Right? Unfortunately, what with all of the senior living centers and  nursing homes and everybody busy running around and smaller families and longer life spans and hospitals giving you every last treatment available, it doesn't always work out like that. But last night it did. Friend, L, brand new nurse, got her very first nursing job this week. Go to patient's home and take care of her at night, husband is a doctor, you'll be ok, you're trained, you'll know what to do. L did everything right. Later into the week, after keeping patient comfortable at night, checking on blood pressure and temperature and all that other medical stuff, early this am something else kicked it, something maybe you can't get any training for and she thought it was time. She went to wake up the husband and he was there with his wife when she died ten minutes later. Peaceful in her own bed.

  1. I'm glad she recognized the signs and that the husband got to be there for the last moments.
