Someone must have stolen all the good books, since I can't seem to find any that hold my attention lately for more than a few pages, usually just grabbing Words With Friends instead and falling asleep with a bunch of lonely, unread pages under my bed. Maybe a Tuesday night with the gang will restart my reader brain again.

M.A.
Five minutes before leaving for a little Tai Chi class tonight, I popped up an ad on Craigslist. After twelve years, our Medical Assistant is moving on. I've been spoiled. The last time I needed to hire anyone, I spread the word in our building, where gossip seems to travel faster than the flu, and later that day I received a fax from someone that came highly recommended and had worked for a colleague for the past five years. Easy. This time things are moving more slowly. I interviewed five people on Friday and went home shaking my head. It's going to be hard to replace someone that's been like a member of the family for so long.
Now I've got forty-seven people who want to come join the fun. Forty-seven and counting...

Stop Gun Violence
"We need to challenge any politician who thinks it's easier to ask an elementary school teacher to stand up to a gunman with an AR-15 than it is to ask them to stand up to a gun lobbyist with a checkbook." - Virginia Techsurvivor Colin Goddard

I'm sorry I was so mean to you, August.
I miss 110 degrees. I know what to do with 110 degrees. You throw on some clothes and go about your day. Stick a little cardigan in your car for the occasional movie or restaurant and you're done. Easy. But 30 degrees? 29? 28? Covering plants. Uncovering plants. Covering plants. Uncovering plants. Covering plants. Uncovering plants. Layering up to prepare for the walk through the garage to the car. Sweating under the scarf in the hot house as you gather purse, gloves, phone. Can't answer the phone with gloves on. Ripping off scarf and gloves because one should be able to walk to the car without eighteen items of clothing. Freezing since you "forgot" to pull the trash to the curb last night since it was dark and the grass was frozen and you didn't want to slip. Sweating after two minutes in the car with the heat blasting. Shocking your face in the morning with icy water. Unable to breathe inside for days. But it's a dry heat. But I can't breathe. Three blankets and a sweatshirt should get you through the night without the thermostat set above 75. Created a big, glorious fire, finally happy to curl up with a book and a couple of cats only to have my own personal Mr. No Burn Day Police Officer Shawn inform me that I'm breaking the law. After all I do to reduce my footprint in this brown cloud? I've tried to be careful with the air. I drive a tiny car. I recycle. I compost. I hardly ever shop or travel anymore, so let me have a fire when it's below freezing. It's the one thing that makes this all worthwhile. That, and wearing cute boots. And snuggling under flannel sheets with a warm guy. And pomegranate hot tea at night.

Yang and Yin
Bring on the yang. In tonight's tai chi/qigong class, it felt like being back at night school, looking around to fellow concerned grad students and wondering, "He wants us to do what?" But, in the end, it all came together and the group somehow moved in unison, calmed the waters, acted like cranes, fanned the air back and forth, back and forth, ending with a strong, solid, grounded tree, one that could not be pushed over, ready to face another day.
Namaste.

The White House Doctor
The White House Doctor
Dr. Mariano spoke at Temple Beth Israel tonight. What a trail-blazer! The first woman to be a White House physician. The first Filipino American to become a Navy Rear Admiral - inspiring, intelligent and even a few prostate jokes.

Qi Gong
I just thought Qi was a really great Words with Friends word, an adorable little high-value word for when you get stuck with a q without any u. But Qi means "chi" or energy or the meaning of life. It's big, really. So, for the new year, Shawn and I signed up for a class. Five weeks with a cool group and an amazing instructor. Breathing, balance, ancient medical advice, acupressure, coordination
and, standing in the back, a few laughs.
