Chi Chi Palm Monday

Namaste.

Shawn and I are back to Tai Chi on Mondays at the incredible Franciscan Renewal Center, moving the chi, or life force, through our palms, in and out, flowing in sync, sort of, with the group. We walked in tonight and saw a very old painting with nuns dressed in black gliding up the side of a hill, reminding me of Madeleine. A few minutes later about eight real nuns came in, joining our class with their sweet, gentle, peaceful faces. Our wonderful teacher, Don, who, after decades here, is teaching
his last class in Arizona and I'm sure the faithful wanted one last chance. He winked at me and whispered, "I guess I'll have to watch what I say." We closed our eyes, we circled, we tai chi'd until there was a real sense of calm, then meandered up Tatum, gliding around our own hill on a cool night with the windows down, after learning to breathe again.

The David Wright House.
Just down the street from where I grew up.
Gobbled up recently by a developer and scheduled for renovations, toured today with Shana and Scott, with all the new sod and gravel. Hope they don't change too much.

Run(or walk)tastic

I don't run. I have bad feet. Big boobs. And, as of a couple of years ago, Mild Bilateral Hip Osteoarthritis. Maybe if I ran, I wouldn't have some of these issues. Way back, I was on the Village Vikings swim team, played tennis with the Arcadia Titans for an entire semester, had some serious years of aerobics in the living room with Jane Fonda and Richard Simmons and was in the gym,s shaking to Kenny Loggins' Danger Zone. I even was asked to be an instructor once back in Virginia Beach, with my super cool headbands and leg warmers. But, for the last couple of decades, it's been slow going. In honor of the fast-approaching BIG 50, I'm going to add a marathon to the list. Or at least a 5K run/walk. Training started this week on my new runtastic ap. Almost got to 5K this morning. The time is not important. It's the distance, right?

Earthy

After a night and day of rain, when I walked over the bridge into DBG, I was stopped in my tracks by the incredible smell of the desert (is it a cliché if I actually stopped walking?) Leslie, my amiga that volunteers her extra time in this stunning place, and I spent a couple of hours listening to some very bright folks talk about our gorgeous open spaces and all they are doing to keep them beautiful and how we can help.
How lucky we are.

It's The Thought That Counts

As Shana, Amy and I stood at the intersection of Wall and Broad Streets on the NYSE "new hire" tour that we crashed, surrounded by young and not-so-young new brokers and traders, our huggy, BFF tour leader turned to Shana and said, "This is Shana everyone. She's from our Phoenix office and she makes sure all the companies that are traded on the Exchange are in compliance." He then went on to tell us about the beginning of our country, the original traders, the government, the banks, the religious institutions - right there on those four corners of that intersection is where it all started.

Even though the temperature was somewhere in the teens, I was glad I was there. I wasn't quite sure why Shana invited me. Maybe she just didn't want to take the train all by herself from Wall Street up to her meeting in upstate New York, but who am I to pass up a girls' trip with my favorite girl? She's running the show these days, making the reservations, checking in to the hotel with her name while I'm just along for the ride. She's more hip than me now. Knows all the cool aps. Knows the NY neighborhoods better than me. Works for the New York Stock Exchange and is my official "Sponsor" to get me in the building. Even got me into Pepsi for a drink in the lobby.

Today's her 24th birthday. She's all grown up now and doesn't need anything from me anymore. Except maybe a travel buddy. Which is fine by me.

Happy Birthday, little one.
