According to my travel book, the Dutch are a very frugal people, some longstanding fear of a flood from the canals that make up most of the city, so they would always like to save and be prepared for the worst, thus the term "Let's go Dutch," let's split it, let's share. Or, in my I still can't believe I'm going, let's pack our bags, get on a plane and literally go Dutch.
